Star Trek Away Missions miniatures.

Another “quick” project with slightly bigger miniatures than the FASA ones previously completed.

Painting the Star Trek: Away Missions miniatures with Army Painter paints is a straightforward process that benefits from a clear workflow. Starting with the Kirk and Scott packages, it helps to prime the figures first—Army Painter’s spray primers give a smooth base coat that makes later layers adhere better. Once primed, block in the main uniform colors using solid base paints. For Kirk, that means a strong yellow for the command tunic, while Scott’s engineering red requires a clean, even coat. Keeping the strokes thin avoids obscuring the sculpted detail.

After the base colors are down, apply washes to bring out the folds and facial features. Army Painter’s washes settle into recesses, adding depth without much effort. Highlights can then be added with lighter tones of the same base colors, focusing on raised areas like shoulders, collars, and hair. Metallic paints work well for phasers and communicator details, while a matte black or grey finishes boots and belts. The process is efficient: prime, basecoat, wash, highlight, and detail. Following this routine ensures the miniatures are tabletop-ready and visually consistent with minimal fuss.
